She sings, she dances, she acts, born into a very artistic family that always encouraged her to pursue her talents, LA-based @GavinTurek was almost destined to work across so many creative fields. A collaboration with Tokimonsta in 2012 launched her career in music, and since then, she’s been a chameleon exploring different musical genres. WHAT WERE YOU LISTENING TO MOST DURING LOCKDOWN?

Lots of Afrobeat - makes me smile and makes me want to dance.

YOU SING, YOU DANCE, YOU ACT – WERE YOU ALWAYS DESTINED TO BE THIS CREATIVE?

Ha! I guess so! I come from a very artistic family, so that has a lot to do with it. My mom is a singer and actress, my dad plays the piano, and my sisters and I always sang together for fun. That environment was very nurturing of my inclination to create and express.

HOW WOULD YOU SAY YOUR MUSICAL STYLE HAS EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS?

It’s evolved a lot because I’ve personally evolved and changed so much. I’ve always been drawn to various genres so it was really hard for me to pin down how I wanted to present myself. For my new album, I wanted to experiment again, not limit myself and go wherever I felt I needed to. What resulted is still funk-influenced and accessible, but a bit slower, more contemplative and genre-less.

WHO ARE YOUR BIGGEST MUSICAL & STYLE INSPIRATIONS?

I’ve always been drawn to divas like Diana Ross, Grace Jones and Chaka Khan. Prince and David Bowie also had that magical combination of musical talent and incredibly unique self-expression through clothing. I personally feel I have only scratched the surface with my on-stage styling. I love the idea of a larger than life stage persona because it encourages the audience to escape and be fearless with me.

HOW DO YOU DRESS FOR CONFIDENCE?

Now I know what I like to accentuate and minimize, I’ve been following my instincts by choosing looks that make me feel good. In other words, if it’s not flattering to my body type, I’m not going to wear it!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR SUMMER SO FAR.

I’ve actually been enjoying this time, taking it day by day, and finding ways to take advantage of the time alone by working on myself. I have been waking up between 7-8 am, doing a devotional, working out, writing, practising and then seeing what else comes up! Some days I feel productive and energized, and other days I feel like I can’t focus. I think it’s good to have grace with yourself and also make intentions to do certain activities every day that will keep you healthy. It’s such an odd summer and year, but I’m determined to find lightness and the blessing in disguise.

SOME OF US MIGHT BE ABLE TO TRAVEL, OTHERS MIGHT HAVE TO SPEND ALL OF SUMMER AT HOME, TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE PLAYLIST YOU CURATED AND HOW IT SUITS THIS FRAGMENTED MOOD?

I chose songs that I’m currently listening to whether I’m at home, taking a drive or at the beach. Each one sounds like summer to me and makes me want to move my body which is very, very important! I added some newly released soulful faves from Lianne La Havas and Jhené Aiko, some classic feel-good jams that always put a smile on my face, then put two perfect dance songs from Burna Boy and Jesse Ware. There are a few funk-inspired tracks from myself and Dornik and some more obscure tracks from artists I recently discovered like Peven Everett. I hope it offers some healthy escapism and inspires people to keep moving whether at home or out.
